Egerton DFAS has a very strong Church Recording Group of sixteen dedicated members, half of whom have been with us from its inception. Most of the others joined as we progressed with our first Church, St Cosmos & St Damian at Challock.

What Church recorders do is to record the inside of churches and all their contents. The way that this is done is laid down very clearly for recorders in conjunction with the Council for the Care of Churches, the V & A, National Monuments Register Office, Canterbury Cathedral (in our case) plus NADFAS itself. All these bodies keep copies of the finished Record and we work under strict guidelines which have been agreed in conjunction with them. The sections we cover are Memorials, Metalwork, Stonework, Woodwork, Textiles, Paintings etc., Library, Windows and then Miscellaneous for everything else, including the organ.

The Egerton DFAS church recording group meets fortnightly under the leadership of Christine Flannery. The group was delighted to complete work on St James the Great in Egerton after many years of work, and the finalized record was presented on Sunday 14th June at the morning service. Many thanks to all the group for their dedication and hard work especially Jennie Burgess and Mike Jamieson!

Church Recording Presentation

Presentation at St. James the Great.

We are looking for more people to join our lively group, as we have now started work in St. Peter and St. Paul, Charing.  If you have an interest in, or qualification relevant to, any aspect of history, Christine would love to hear from you. We need people to work on textiles, the archives and many other items – non specialists are very welcome, too!

Christine Flannery.
